The OECS Essay Competition is geared towards stimulating critical thinking among the students of the Eastern Caribbean Currency Union (ECCU). The competition also seeks to motivate the students to engage in discussions on issues that impact the development of the OECS countries.

Rules of the Competition

  • The competition is open to students of the OECS member countries ages 14 to 19.
  • The entries are judged in two categories: ages 14 to 16 and ages 17 to 19.
  • Essays must be 750 to 1000 words and must be typewritten, double-line space on letter size paper (8.5 x 11 inches).
  • The OECS Essay Competition Cover Sheet must be attached to each essay before submission.
  • The essays are assessed for content, soundness of points, logical development, knowledge of the subject, command of language and presentation.
  • Children or wards of the ECCB management and staff are not eligible to enter the competition.
  • Essays must be written on one of the topics listed below.
  1. A country's standard of living is linked to its ability to produce its own goods and services. Discuss.
  2. In this age of modern technology, libraries are obsolete and work needs to be done to make them more relevant. Discuss.
  3. Britain's withdrawal from the European Union can negatively impact the economies of the OECS. Discuss.

Cash prizes amounting to EC$10,000 will be awarded to the first, second and third place winners in each category.

Essays must be submitted to the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank
P O Box 89, Basseterre St Kitts and Nevis, or to the ECCB Agency Office in your country
Deadline for submitting your essay is: 31 March 2017.
