Governor of the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank (ECCB), Timothy N. J. Antoine, has given his support to the UWI Global Giving Initiative, which provides assistance to students studying at the University of the West Indies, whose lives and finances have been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.
The UWI launched the region-wide initiative on 1 August, Emancipation Day, declaring the month as Global Giving Month.
Speaking on the recent ECCB Digital Dialogues, Governor Antoine, a UWI Alumnus, said that in this period of the pandemic, at least 10,000 students are at risk of not being able to complete their education because of the financial fall out.
The Governor added that it is important to help the young people to protect their future. “If we lose their future, we lose the future of our region and we cannot afford to step back in tertiary education right now,” Governor Antoine said as he appealed to fellow alumni, corporate citizens and friends of the UWI to make a donation to help the students complete their education and make their contribution to the region’s development.
